For an extended period, OBBA has recognized Biodiversity Week as a crucial initiative dedicated to nurturing the preservation of coastal and marine biodiversity, specifically focusing on the Lebanese shoreline and aquatic environments. OBBA has vigilantly monitored and safeguarded monk seals, sea turtles, dolphins, and various other fauna and flora species, while also disseminating information and images to bolster community engagement.

Biodiversityweek subsection 2024

For the first time in Lebanon, OBBA is organizing an event on May 25th to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving the Monk Seal habitat off the Beirut Coast. As part of this initiative, a bench made of cement and microplastic will be installed at the Raouche area, overlooking the iconic Raouche rock. The Raouche Cave, historically used by the Monk Seals of Beirut, adds significance to this location, which is frequented by both locals and tourists. The bench will feature an information board explaining the importance of the seal's presence for both marine life and the economy as a tourist attraction. This monument is a component of the Ocean Literacy Hub project, established by OBBA and funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), implemented by UNDP through the Small Grants Program (SGP). The project has received guidance from the Faculty of Engineering at the American University of Beirut (AUB) regarding the cement/microplastic mixture used in the monument. This initiative builds upon the Microplastic in Construction project initiated by Cedars for Care in 2023, also funded by the GEF and implemented by UNDP through the SGP.
